Let's Get Physical

Wouldn't it be great to have a personal trainer? Someone to keep you motivated when the going gets tough, to boost your confidence and help you navigate the world of health and fitness. Knowing which sports and techniques best suit your body, when to work out and how long for isn't easy when you're going it alone. But with the Olympic Games just 23 weeks away, it seems working up a sweat is on everybody's mind.

We might not be Jane Fonda and we're certainly no Mr Motivator, but with the weather getting (slightly) warmer and brighter, we've compiled a list of five fantastic websites to help you get up and running (no pun intended).

1. Swimming: www.swimsmooth.com does exactly what it says on the tin. The website offers a series of clear videos to help profile your swimming technique before giving tips on how to improve your favourite stroke.

2. Cycling: www.cycle-route.com is a great tool if you're planning a weekend adventure or a quick evening work out. The website features thousands of tried and tested routes from across the UK, uploaded by fellow cyclists. The routes are clearly mapped and also have information on length, duration and difficulty.

3. Gym: If like me you're a little unsure about floor work and feel silly rolling around on a mat in the gym, www.abc-of-fitness.com is the place for you. The website provides clear videos and pictures instructing you on how to do every lift, bend and stretch imaginable. From lunges and crunches to bicep curls, the website also shows you the muscles you should be using in each exercise to make sure you're doing it right.

4. Yoga: There are hundreds of great yoga websites out there, but few are free and easy to use. Luckily, www.myfreeyoga.com is both. The site offers lengthy video tutorials (some are 60 minutes long) for yoga fans of all abilities.

5. Podrunner: An app rather than a website, but still a must-have for gym bunnies. Podrunner (www.podrunner.com) is a free download that works on iPods, iPhones and mp3 players. Created by DJ Steve Boyett, Podrunner provides free workout mixes that are on average 60 minutes long and are produced at various BPM (Beats Per Minute) speeds to match whichever machine you're using.
